Watchable Wildlife

From majestic American white pelicans gathering on area lakes to white-tailed deer roaming forested hillsides, the Oklahoma Ozarks are a haven for nature lovers and wildlife watchers. Bird enthusiasts can spot a variety of migratory and native species, while rivers, lakes and woodlands support a diverse array of wildlife that makes every outdoor adventure a chance for discovery.

Herons & Shorebirds - A Summertime Favorite!

Summer is an ideal time to observe herons and other shorebirds throughout the Oklahoma Ozarks, especially along the quiet coves of Lake Tenkiller and the scenic Illinois River.

Great Blue Herons, Green Herons, egrets, and kingfishers are commonly seen stalking the shallows for fish or standing motionless along the shoreline.

For the best viewing opportunities, head out during the early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are cooler and wildlife is most active. Bring binoculars, move quietly, and watch the water's edge—you may be rewarded with an unforgettable glimpse of these graceful birds in their natural habitat.
